11 Reasons to Send a Card or Letter

11 Reasons to Send a Card or Letter

One of the things I hear most often at in-person markets is “I love your cards - but I never send anyone any mail.”  It always makes me a little bit sad because in an age of digital communication, receiving a card or letter is more meaningful than ever before.  Just think about how happy it makes you when you check the mail and there is something other than bills and junk mail there.

I know it can be hard to think of “good” reasons to send people mail, so in this blog post I’ll give you some ideas of when to send mail.  Together, lets bring back the beloved tradition of a hand written note.

Celebrate Life’s Big Moments

  • Birthdays: The classic reason to send someone a card, but not one to be overlooked.  In a world of Facebook happy birthday comments and quick texts - just think of how much it means to receive a physical card in the mail.  Not only is a great way to let someone know you remembered their birthday ahead of time, but also to take the time to pick out a card, write a message, and send it shows how much you care.  Bonus points if you tuck some fun little gifts like stickers inside. Check out our birthday cards HERE.
  • Weddings and Anniversaries: Celebrate the happy couple with a card, and maybe include some words of advice or a Bible verse.
  • Congratulations on achievements: Want to make someone feel really loved and appreciated? Send them a card congratulating them on an achievement.  This could be anything from graduating from highschool or college, getting a new job or a promotion, buying a home, having a baby, or even something fun like a 1,000 day streak on Duolingo (iykyk). Thoughtful Gestures for Challenging Times

  • Condolences: Loss and grief can be hard to bear - and receiving a handwritten note of condolences means a lot to someone going through a hard time.
  • Get Well Soon: A card can brighten someone’s day and lift their spirits when they’re feeling under the weather. We all know hospital rooms are grey and booorrring so cheer someone up with a card.
  • Just Thinking of You: Sometimes, no special occasion is needed to send a card of support and love. We all know that life sometimes feels like a battle ground, and it can get discouraging.  Sending a note of encouragement will make someones day - let them know that you’re thinking of them and that you care.  All purpose notecards are great to have on hand so you can write a note at any time.

Everyday Joy and Connection

  • Thank You Notes: Whether for a gift or act of kindness, express gratitude in a meaningful way.  Need help writing the perfect thank you note? Check out THIS BLOG POST to learn my formula for writing a perfect thank you note every time.
  • Love Letters: Bring back the romance by sending a handwritten love letter to your partner. Writing a note to them is a great way for them to keep your words of love and appreciation close to read again and again - my husband often uses cards from me as bookmarks, and I like to keep some from him in my nightstand to read when I need a little encouragement.
  • Seasonal Greetings: Mark changes in the seasons (like autumn or spring) with a themed card that shows you care. Tuck a seasonally appropriate small gift inside, like seeds in the springtime or a bag of your favorite tea in the autumn. Check out our autumn collection for ideas HERE
  • Stay in Touch with Friends: Mail is a more intimate way to keep in touch than text or email, especially for those long-distance friends. I love sending mail to friends and receiving it back - and I also love to collect little things to tuck inside those notes, or write down little quotes or songs that they might enjoy.  “Letter writing is the only device combining solitude with good company.” - Lord Byron

Holidays

The classic Christmas card is an obvious go-to, but you could also send friends and loved ones cards for other holidays.  Think a sweet card about what you're thankful for around Thanksgiving, or something you’re looking forward to in the New Year.

As you can see, there are so many reasons to send happy mail.  It's a thoughtful gesture and a beautiful tradition.  Card and letter writing is a hobby that will strengthen friendships and bonds as well as make someone’s day so much brighter.  So what are you waiting for? Grab a card and send a note to someone today.  Don’t overthink it or overcomplicate it, I can guarantee that the recipient will love it! Need a card? Shop our stationery collection HERE.
